biography

  • Dr. Jean Hannan is a Tenured Associate Professor at the Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing and Health Sciences. Since her arrival at FIU in 2005, Dr. Hannan and collaborated and completed multiple research projects that have transformed nursing research on pediatric and family care.

    After earning an undergraduate degree and while working at Jackson Memorial Hospital, Dr. Hannan enrolled in FIU’s nurse practitioner program and completed her Bachelor of Nursing, Master of Science in Nursing, and PhD in Nursing at FIU.

    Dr. Hannan has received over $2.5 Million in funding. She has been a Principal Investigator on a grant funded by the National Institutes of Health examining an intervention to improve healthcare access for low-income mothers and their infants. Dr. Hannan has also served as a Co-Investigator on a Canadian Institute of Health-funded grant for a multi-international study examining ethno-cultural infant feeding practices with HIV+ mothers.

    Her research projects funded by the National Institutes of Health follow low-income first-time mothers with little or no access to healthcare. Her funded projects have examined if nurse practitioners’ calling or texting these mothers can improve maternal and infant health while decreasing healthcare costs.

    Dr. Hanna has been instrumental in the university efforts to advertise PhD in Nursing program in nursing journals, nursing conferences locally, regionally and nationally.

    Dr. Hanna is a member of the American Academy of Nursing whose program of research focuses on improving health outcomes of minority mothers and their infants leading to lower healthcare costs. In 2017, she became a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), one of the highest honors in nursing.
