Dr. Angela K. Salmon is an Associate Professor in Early Childhood Education at Florida International University in Miami, Florida, USA. Angela is the founder and leader of the Visible Thinking South Florida initiative, a learning community of practice. She is an alumna of the Fulbright Global Scholar Award to Colombia, Poland, and Greece.
Angela has a well-earned reputation for building learning communities of practice and empowering teachers to gain ownership in their teaching. She is a firm believer in learning communities of practice as change engines. She emphasizes the teacherâs discourse in the classroom to promote thinking and learning in children, including intentional quality questioning. Her research line and practice draw on progressive ideas that foster authentic and meaningful learning. She prepares teachers to engage children cognitively and emotionally in identifying real-life problems and in finding solutions to navigate a complex, changing world. Her research stems from coaching teachers to implement cutting-edge research on thinking in the classroom and to promote global competencies. She studies the interplay between cognition, language, and literacy development in young children. This drives her to explore executive functions and habits of mind reflected in digital storytelling, play, and music. Her current research is on digital collective stories for influence as a venue to give children a voice. As a childrenâs rights advocate, she constantly seeks ways to promote childrenâs participation through storytelling. Her recent co-authored book âChildrenâs Literature Aligned with SDGs to Promote Global Competencies: A Practical Resource for Early Childhood Education reflects some of her work in practice.â
Dr. Salmon is an international consultant and lecturer who has contributed with keynote presentations and consulting through the USA, Canada, Central and South American Countries, Greece, Poland, Spain, New Zealand, and Australia. The Independent Schools of Victoria in Melbourne, Australia, invited her as a âThinker in Residence.â She consults for schools and universities around the globe.
