biography

  • Dr. Tim Goddard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida International University. He holds a Ph.D. in Criminology, Law & Society from the University of California, Irvine—a distinguished graduate program of criminology studies.

    Dr. Tim Goddard’s research has focused on the governance of crime and young people through community-based interventions. His work critically analyzes the impact of crime and social policies on marginalized and disadvantaged populations, particularly young people of color. Relatedly, he has conducted qualitative research on community-led efforts that work against harmful crime and social policies. His co-authored 2018 book Youth, Community and the Struggle for Social Justice (Routledge) examines social justice organizations' alternative youth justice interventions to raise individual and community consciousness of the relationship between poverty, racism, and neoliberal carceralism.

    Dr. Goddard’s most recent work challenges the use of risk assessment instruments in carceral settings by arguing that they are inadvertently, but carelessly, biased predictions of future misconduct. On sabbatical during the spring 2023 semester, Dr. Goddard is collecting data and writing a solo-authored book about risk assessment instruments in the criminal legal system,

    Dr. Goddard’s research has appeared in various journals, including Theoretical Criminology, British Journal of Criminology, Punishment and Society, Critical Criminology, Youth Justice, Social Justice, and the International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy. Dr. Goddard is a contributing author to chapters in multiple edited books, including Young People Re-Generating Politics in Times of Crises, 2018 (Palgrave-Macmillan), The Handbook of the History and Philosophy of Criminology, 2018 (John Wiley & Sons), Progressive Justice in an Age of Repression, 2019 (Routledge), Justice Alternatives, 2020 (Routledge), and the International Handbook of Activist Criminology, forthcoming (Emerald Publishing).

    Dr. Goddard regularly teaches the undergraduate course Senior Capstone in Criminal Justice and graduate capstone course Criminal Justice Policy Analysis, as well as Race, Punishment, and Society. His commitment to teaching is reflected in two Writing Across the Curriculum grants to improve student writing in the department’s undergraduate capstone class.
