abstract

  • This paper presents a novel design approach for a microstrip tapering network with tunable output power. The tunability is achieved by adjusting the capacitance, allowing continuous and arbitrary control of the output power level to accommodate various application requirements. A prototype of a two-way microstrip power divider was first designed and fabricated at 4. 5 GHz to demonstrate both equal power division and having the entire power being transmitted from exclusively one port with the other port being completely off. Following the successful validation of the two-way divider, the concept was extended to a five-way tapering network using the same tuning methodology. The fabricated five-way microstrip tapering network, operating at 5 GHz, was tested under two configurations: (1) uniform amplitude tapering, achieving a measured power efficiency of 84%, and (2) Chebyshev amplitude tapering, achieving a measured power efficiency of 83%.
