The dementia crisis is a pressing public health issue, impacting millions globally. In Miami-Dade County, culturally competent dementia education is essential due to our diverse population. Our presentation, "It Takes a Village: Igniting a Dementia Movement," explores the journey from a modest Public Service Announcement (PSA) to the development of a comprehensive Dementia Awareness Educational Video (DAEV) Series.
This initiative began with a two-minute PSA aimed at raising awareness about the profound impact of dementia on individuals, families, and communities. Recognizing the global magnitude of dementia, we expanded our efforts, incorporating diverse caregiver narratives to resonate across cultures. Our DAEV Series seeks to foster a dementia-informed society through collaboration with local, state, and national organizations, ultimately influencing policy, community engagement, and educational outreach.
A qualitative study involving a virtual focus group with community stakeholders highlighted the need for message clarity and effective dissemination strategies. Insights from participants, predominantly of Hispanic descent and highly educated, emphasized the importance of incorporating more visuals, addressing language barriers, and providing clear calls to action. Suggested dissemination channels included physician offices, waiting rooms, online platforms, social media, and community partners.
Our findings underscore the importance of culturally competent education in addressing dementia within diverse communities. By leveraging community insights and fostering collaboration, we aim to ensure comprehensive dementia awareness and support for all affected individuals and families
