abstract

  • This study explored the narratives of 12 Queer Students of Color as they described their resilience at a predominantly white institution, specifically in relation to manifestations of oppression. Using intersectionality as a theoretical framework, this research revealed that family, student organizations, and connections on campus positively influenced their resilience; conversely, oppressive ideologies on campus, a lack of institutional actions, and siloed identity groups served as risk factors. Moreover, findings showed the complex relationship between mental health and resilience for Queer Students of Color. This study offers implications for staff and faculty as they strive to ensure the success of Queer Collegians of Color with an attention to structural inequalities.
