The building ofmany large buildings inclose proximityinlarge cities raises some issues to do with wind that have received little public discussion. When a new building is inserted into the existing conglomeration of buildings it changes the wind flow patterns around those that are nearby. These effects tend to diminish with distance from the new building but within the nearest few blocks the changes in flow patterns can be expected to affect the following.! The wind speeds at ground level. ! Wind loads on the exterior cladding of nearby buildings. ! Wind-induced loads on the main structural systems of nearby buildings. ! Wind-induced motions of nearby buildings. ! Dispersion of air pollution in the area surrounding the new building.! The accumulationof snow in drifts, and therefore the snow loads, on nearby roofs.
