A simple criterion for the flutter velocity to be used in sectional model tests is proposed, namely 1.25 times the 100 year 10 minute mean speed at deck height for areas not affected by hurricanes. In hurricane areas the factor is increased from 1.25 to 1.50. Criteria for vortex shedding and the simulation of turbulence in sectional model testing have also been reviewed. A number of controlling factors influencing the aerodynamic stability of cable stayed bridges are presented.
