abstract
RWDI has provided wind loading on the majority of the retractable roof stadia in North America and specifically on Minute Maid Park, Reliant Stadium and most recently Miami Marlins Ballpark in hurricane areas. The process of providing the wind loading on Reliant Stadium and Minute Maid Park provided the challenges of assessing the risks relating to the internal pressurization of the building in the roof closed position for hurricane passage. The internal pressurization of the stadium being impacted by the potential for debris impact including large glass wall breakage leading to dominant openings and the potential failure of windward seals between roof panels leading to potential dominant openings. RWDI worked collaboratively with Walter P. Moore and Associates to find solutions to these potential large internal pressure increases impacting design for hurricane conditions. © ASCE and ATC 2013.
