abstract

  • This dataset contains full-text transcripts, tabular data, and geospatial data from the Dana A. Dorsey archival collection, covering the years 1900 to 1956. Compiled to bring attention to the individuals, entities, and locations that played significant roles in early 20th-century Black real estate transactions in Miami, this dataset highlights previously marginalized figures and helps explore the networks within the Black community involved in these transactions. The dataset includes full-text transcripts of 291 documents—deeds, tax records, correspondence, and other legal materials—from the Dorsey collection. These transcripts serve as primary sources, detailing the transactions and interactions within Miami's early Black community. The tabular data is extracted from these texts and includes detailed information on: People: 879 individuals, with features such as last name, full name, alternate names, gender, marital status, role, business affiliations, occupations, memberships, and document references. Entities: 272 businesses, associations, religious organizations, municipalities, and utilities, with features like entity name, type, and document references. Locations: 145 sites, with data on raw text descriptions, point coordinates, and associated documents. (2025-04-02)
