abstract

  • Background: The prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is constantly increasing. Our Health Care system, either the Department of education, is struggling to adjust to the needs of children with ASD. As example, only 50% of children with ASD are embedded in French School. The purpose of this work was to disclose the perceptions of parents and teachers when facing the different stages of children with ASD. Methods: A qualitative study was performed on the year 2017–2018. This study was conducted with parents of children with ASD and with teachers located in Paris and its suburbs. After transcript, a descriptive and theorization analysis was achieved. The semi-directed interviews were conducted until data saturation. A constant comparison analysis with triangulation of the researchers was also carried out. Results: Ten parents and ten teachers were interviewed. First, they have described significant difficulties to establish a diagnosis and second, to ensure an appropriate support of the Health Care system is brought due to delays, complex and lengthy procedures. Parents and teachers struggled to get the recommended help that lead to exhaustion. They also felt helplessness and lacking information. Both ask for a better coordination between relevant actors and more team works. Conclusion: Nowadays, the medical care of a child with ASD is a real challenge for parents and teachers looking for solutions. Despite the difficulties encountered, teachers and parents encouraged inclusion of children with ASD in day-to-day environment.
