abstract

  • In this chapter, we present an overview of health misinformation manifested in various venues and formats, including user-generated health misinformation that becomes widespread on social media platforms like TikTok or is conveyed through internet memes, health misinformation identified in entertainment media, and celebrity-endorsed misinformation. We discuss how health misinformation in different venues might have emerged and influenced the public. Additionally, we review current misinformation mitigation strategies, including fact-checking, using expert sources, algorithmic correction interventions, narrative rebuttals, and educational programs on literacy and inoculation. We explore the potential of these strategies to effectively curb health misinformation in popular culture.
