abstract

  • This panel asks, "How can we see ChatGpt as a tool to improve learning outcomes and upskill GenZ public sector practitioners and leaders?" A recent University of Pennsylvania study (Orrell, 2023) found that "80 percent of American jobs will likely see at least 10 percent of their tasks altered by AI, while almost 20 percent of jobs will see at least 50 percent of their tasks altered". Another study by Goldman Sachs (2022) echoed the above findings, estimating that 18 percent of jobs globally could be computerized with "knowledge" and "information" tasks especially exposed. Technological innovation, like ChatGpt, requires businesses, workers, and educators to learn and adapt (at times, two complex processes). For GenZ practitioners and future leaders, it means upskilling within an existing job or finding a new job. For educators, it means integrating AI platforms such as ChatGpt into our courses. According to Ofang (2023), many educators agree with balancing ChatGPT with caution and encouraging students to access the tools correctly. For example, we can teach with ChatGPT and have ChatGpt critique student work. Both techniques can be an engaging way to get students thinking critically about both writing and the potential and limitations of this new technology. AI, such as ChatGpt, is not the end of work. Instead, it is a new tool that, just like new tools of the past, will take time, effort, and practice to master.
