abstract

  • South Florida is not just a tourist and emigration magnet but also a magnet for hurricanes. Notwithstanding the hurricanes, Covid-19 has made the state more popular than ever leading to even more people moving to the state. This increased migration is leading to more development along the coast and a greater exposure to hurricanes. Add to this is the belief that hurricanes are becoming more powerful due to increased sea surface temperatures and one wonders if South Florida is an environmental disaster waiting to happen. In this paper we investigate if powerful hurricanes are increasing and what factors influence the intensity of hurricanes. To do so, we use a logistic regression model for predicting hurricane intensity. We conclude that mid-level humidity is the most important factor affecting hurricane intensity.
