abstract

  • This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides the information on the generation of Terahertz (THz) continuous waves based on the optical heterodyne approach by employing two-slightly detuned infrared lasers. It discusses that plasmonics based approaches can be used to enhance the performance of photoconductive (PC) antennas. Good understanding of the photoconductor physics is necessary for this purpose together with consideration of the impact of the PC antenna and itsoperation as emitter and detector of pulsed and continuous-wave THz radiation. Quantum cascade lasers are promising devices for THz signal generation. The book discusses their design, state-of-the-art performance and limitations, and potential for improvement based on novel materials systems. It also provides the details on multipliers fundamentals and their space applications, and describes wireless communication systems at THz.
