abstract

  • Milich, Balentine, and Lynam have produced a highquality analysis of the relationship between the inattentive and combined subtypes of ADHD. Although the debate over whether the predominantly inattentive type should be considered as a separate disorder is a current hot topic, this commentary concerns a broader issue: how important is this issue? I argue that DSM diagnoses are unimportant when treating an individual child and that assessment and treatment should focus on careful functional analysis of impairment rather than on symptom counts.
