abstract

  • The chapter suggests integrating dialectal Spanish negotiations in undergraduate TESOL courses at Florida International University (FIU), as an approach to contextualize and localize TESOL curriculum. FIU is the largest Hispanic-Serving Institution in the U.S. for awarded undergraduate and graduate degrees. In addition to giving a rationale for our proposal to reflect and represent demographics and translingual interactions of the diverse student population, we provide concrete examples of FIU courses to embed Spanish components in TESOL teacher education curricula via possible disciplinary bridging. Even though the context of our chapter is FIU in Miami, it has wider implications to other areas having large and growing populations of domestic and overseas immigrants. In this sense, the locality of this chapter will represent more universities in the future, when it comes to dissecting transnationalism into the level of languages and dialects in the light of contextualizing curriculum and pedagogical practice.
