abstract
Each year, approximately 250,000 procedures are performed to repair or replace damaged heart valves, and 50,000 aortic valve replacements are performed annually to treat severe stenosis of the aortic heart valve. Clearly, biomechanical forces play a major role in the physiology and pathophysiology of heart valves. The objective of this chapter it to provide an overview of biomechanics of heart valves with emphasis on the interaction between tissue, blood and engineered devices. Future prospects in tissue engineered heart valves, multi-scale computational modeling and percutaneous approaches are also highlighted. © 2012 Nova Science Publishers, Inc. All rights reserved.
