abstract

  • Supplement use is the most common form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States. Patients taking supplements may not tell their physicians they are taking these agents, thinking they are innocuous because they are derived from nature. However, many factors need to be considered before taking supplements, including the patient's overall health status (eg, comorbidities) and the potential for interactions with prescription medications, other supplements, and even food. The authors review these factors in the context of an extreme case of CAM in a patient with advanced Alzheimer's disease. They also provide insights on discussing supplements with patients to ensure they are used safely and only when appropriate. © 2014 HMP Communications.
