abstract

  • A network-evolution model is reported that imitates the changes in IP backbone infrastructure for projecting the future growth of internet. Due to increasing traffic, the model suggests two models to upgrade backbone networks, namely, increasing the capacity of IP routers, and/or adding links to the network. The major challenge in this economic modeling is the lack of clear understanding of the underlying network evolution procedures. The results of the modeling show that increasing traffic in the network can best be handled by upgrading existing capacities, rather than by adding new nodes.
