abstract

  • It is unlikely that the rate of very low birthweight infants born annually will change in the near future. However, efforts to improve their outcomes and to control the cost of their care will continue. Professional opinion, special interests, politics, and values all will play some role in public policy decisions about the provision of care to this group, especially during periods of economic restraint. In this context it is even more important for nursing to examine alternative models of care that are efficacious, that justify their costs, and that promote the image and self‐determination of the profession in advancing its practice.
