Maria Stevens, MD is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Family and Community Medicine in the Department of Humanities, Health, and Society and Course Director of the Clinical Medicine courses in the first and second year at FIU HWCOM. She received her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed her residency training in Family Medicine at Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
Since joining FIU as faculty in 2017, Dr. Stevens has focused on teaching, advising and mentoring medical students at all stages of their training. She is involved in simulation-based education, curriculum development, and assessment. Her work has been recognized and reflected in her many accomplishments including the 2020 HWCOM Excellence in Teaching Award for Small Group Instruction and 2019 South Florida’s Top Black Educators Award.
Dr. Stevens is passionate about providing care to the underserved and has advocated for the rights of women, underrepresented minority groups, and persons with disabilities.
research interests
Her interests include incorporating diversity and inclusion into the medical school curriculum; recruitment and retention of minorities in medicine; and educating early learners to become patient-centered, culturally competent physicians and leaders in healthcare.
