Patience is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Franco Lab at the Florida International University (FIU) Center for Translational Science in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. Her academic journey includes a B.S. in Microbiology from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, followed by a Ph.D. in Biomedical Science from the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine, FIU, Miami, Florida. During her graduate studies in the Rosen lab, her research focused on microbial biotransformation of arsenic and the transport of arsenic across biological membranes. Her pioneering work on the membrane transporter ArsQ revealed a novel arsenic resistance pathway with potential applications in limiting human exposure to arsenic. She joined the Franco lab in Fall 2023. Her current research focuses on the identification of nitrated proteins with disease-driving functions in neurological disorders including cancers of the nervous system, with the ultimate goal of developing safe, long-term therapeutic approaches.
