  • Jennifer L. Martin, PhD is Professor and Director of the Benjamin Leon Jr. Family Center for Geriatrics Research and Educaiton in the Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine at Florida International University. Her research focuses on sleep disorders and their impact on health, functioning, and quality of life. Her work has included development and testing of novel approaches to treating insomnia disorder and sleep apnea in older adults, women, and individuals with complex medical and psychiatric conditions. Through clinical research and translational science, Dr. Martin investigates behavioral and evidence-based interventions that improve sleep health across diverse populations, with particular attention to underserved and aging communities.

    Dr. Martin's current reserach focuses on treatment of chronic insomnia disorder among veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, diagnosis and treatment of co-morbid sleep apnea and insomnia in women, and improving sleep and quality of live among persons living with dementia and their family caregivers. Dr. Martin also serves as a reserach mentor to students and early-career faculty interested in sleep disorders, aging and women's health. Her current research and mentoring activities are supported by large federal grants from VA and NIH.

    In addition to her research and teaching at FIU, Dr. Martin serves as the Director of the Geriatric Reserach, Education and Clincial Center at the VA Miami Healthcare System, and a psychologist providing care to Vetearns with sleep disorders. She is a recent past-president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and has been honored with numerous awards including VA's Health System Impact Award for 2024, highlighting the critical impacts of her reserach work on patient care.
