Theatre Academic Department

The Theatre Department at Florida International University is uniquely situated in a major global city distinguished by cultural diversity and a vibrant arts scene. Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Theatre, the departments primary purpose is to immerse students in practical work while familiarizing them with world theatre history, criticism, theory, and analysis. All theatre studies are set against a liberal arts backdrop, which prepares students for healthy careers in the arts and beyond. Students not only have multiple production opportunities in various theatre venues on campus, but through participation in national and international internships, as well as in productions at distinguished local theatres, many of which are populated by FIU alumni. The department is committed to enriching the lives of students and community members through the spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration in the teaching and practice of theatrical traditions and in the pursuit of new theatrical forms. Faculty are recognized, active professionals who are master teachers. They closely mentor their students, many of whom have been awarded for their design-technical, performance, directing, stage managing, and playwriting efforts, and who have gone on to impressive professional careers. The accomplished faculty are well-known for their compassionate mentoring and impressive range of approaches to their disciplines. Students not only become steeped in the fundamentals, but acquire knowledge and receive experience in an array of techniques and methods that help produce successful results in their specific areas of study.
