abstract

  • The author presents a numerical technique for the design of radio-frequency powered coils for use in implantable stimulators. An implantable stimulator is used in conjunction with an external transmitter to established a bidirectional communication link. Such a link is used to control, and to obtain diagnostic information from, the implant. Several applications utilize such a noninvasive link to avoid breaking the skin, and therefore eliminate the risk of infection associated with invasive means. Such applications for which the technique is applicable include cardiac pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, antitachycardia devices, drug delivery systems, monitoring systems, and other stimulators.
