Doctoral students are required to prepare and defend a research proposal. In this paper, we present five steps for doctoral students to identify the questions that are worthy of investigation and thence to develop a research plan and proposal. Our method involves five steps, namely, Step 1: Frame the problem Step 2: Develop a research plan Step 3: Verification and validation Step 4: Proposal template Step 5: Proposal outline We illustrate the method using the sustainable design of plugin- electric vehicle charging stations as an example.
