Status epilepticus is a relatively common pediatric neurological emergency which can cause significant morbidity and mortality. Most isolated generalized seizures last less than 5 minutes. The difficulty of controlling seizures is proportional to their duration. If a generalized seizure continues beyond 5 minutes, pharmacologic intervention is usually indicated. This review focuses on the diagnosis and management of status epilepticus in children, with emphasis on a time attentive treatment algorithm.
