Pulse oximetry is a technology which allows for non-invasive monitoring of a patient's arterial oxygen hemoglobin saturation. Pulse oximetry has become an essential tool of modern medicine and is currently recommended for monitoring of all critically ill or unstable patients, as well as patients undergoing sedation, anesthesia or recovery. A pulse oximeter is a device which calculates a percent arterial oxygen (O2) Saturation (SpO2) using, in an algorithm, the ratio of red (660 nm) light to infrared (940 nm) light transmitted through a thin body part, i.e. fingertip, earlobe, or neonate's foot. This review describes the history, principles, accuracy, applications, and limitations of conventional pulse oximetry and advances in reflectance oximetry.
