abstract

  • Metabolic acidosis is a common acid-base disturbance in children. It is caused by either a loss of bicarbonate ions or an accumulation of organic or inorganic acids in the serum. These two mechanisms can be differentiated by assessing the anion gap. This review presents the pathophysiology of metabolic acidosis and of an abnormal anion gap. It further describes the utility of routinely measuring the anion gap in children with metabolic acidosis.
