Hypertension is a common medical condition that affects approximately 30% of the adult population and about 1-3% of children and adolescents. Hypertensive crises are divided into emergencies and urgencies depending on the involvement of end organ. These require prompt intervention by the medical staff and treatment to prevent or limit end organ damage. This article reviews definitions, current concepts in the diagnosis and management of patients with acutely elevated blood pressure, and current pharmacological treatment available.
