  • Hyponatremia is a common electrolyte disorder seen in all pediatric age groups and in a broad spectrum of patients, from asymptomatic to critically ill. Hospitalized children receiving parenteral fluids are more prone to develop hyponatremia. Children are particularly at risk for developing complications of hyponatremia and its treatment, including serious neurological sequelae. An understanding of the pathophysiology of hyponatremia and its differential diagnosis is essential before effective therapy can be initiated. The etiology, pathophysiology, prevention, and treatment of hyponatremia are reviewed in this article. Copyright © 2006 Miami Children's Hospital.
