  • A Marchand balun is designed based on nonuniform transmission line sections. A third order balun transformer is designed using three non-uniform transmission line sections. The characteristic impedance profile of the sections is optimized applying a convex optimization algorithm implemented with open source tools. A design example is presented for a wideband balun transformer in a tightly coupled dipole array, TCDA, antenna. The obtained VSWR is less than 2.5 from 0.695 GHz to 4.944 GHz for a 7.1:1 bandwidth at broadside.
