abstract

  • This work develops a single-inverter implementation of a dual-stator, single-rotor hybrid vernier machine that achieves brushless wound-field control through sub-harmonic excitation. Two 24-slot stators are arranged around a shared modulation rotor with 44 slots at each airgap interface, and coordinated excitation enables low-speed vernier operation with a practical transition to synchronous operation for an extended speed range. Brushless field excitation is achieved by inducing a voltage in the rotor harmonic excitation winding and rectifying it on the rotor to supply the wound field winding, thereby eliminating brushes and slip rings. By energizing only one stator from a single inverter and leaving the second stator open-circuited, the drive reduces converter count, wiring, and control burden while retaining torque capability and torque quality comparable to the dual-inverter supply case. The feasibility and torque characteristics are verified using a full electromagnetic model evaluated with finite-element analysis in Ansys Electronics Desktop.
