  • Coastal wetlands occupy the terrestrial-marine interface—a position in the landscape that contributes to diverse and valuable ecosystem services. Coastal wetlands are under threat from both direct and indirect human influences. Climate change is driving sea level rise and influencing storms, leading to the loss and retreat of coastal wetlands. Expansive human development in coastal landscapes is also displacing natural wetlands and preventing the natural inland progression of these habitats as sea level rises. The salinization of freshwater coastal wetlands impacts plant community composition and biogeochemical processes, further altering these wetlands’ ability to deliver vital ecosystem services. As landscapes transition, novel and strategic conservation approaches are needed to protect vulnerable coastal wetlands and their valuable contributions to society.
