Nonverbal communication is a cultural process of exchanging codes that are established, relayed, and interpreted through a culture-specific perspective. In virtual exchange (VE) programs, such as COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning), cultural differences in nonverbal communication can negatively or positively influence students’ experiences and the effectiveness of global collaborative teams. This study attempts to contribute to the understanding of students’ participatory behaviors in video conference collaborative activities by exploring the impact of cultural differences in nonverbal communication. Understanding cultural aspects in nonverbal communication while video conferencing in VE programs will help develop culturally sensitive strategies that will allow inclusive diversity and increase participation and collaboration in VE.
