Cadmium (Cd) inputs in soils have been significantly increased over the last 20 years. Various approaches have been used to remove Cd from contaminated soils, with bioremediation through plants and soil microbes being the most effective. This study investigated interactions of a new plant growth promoting fungus (PGPF), Cladosporium 'BF-F' with Sesuvium portulacastrum plants for bioremediation of Cd in a laboratory setting. Results showed that 'BF-F' was able to colonize S. portulacastrum which substantially increased plant growth and Cd accumulation in S. portulacastrum. To gain potential mechanisms underlying the 'BF-F'-mediated Cd accumulation, colonized plants along with control plants were further investigated via transcriptomic analysis. Data indicated that the expression of genes related to zinc and copper uptake and transport were significantly higher in Cd-stressed plants inoculated with 'BF-F'. The upregulation of these genes promoted plant uptake of Cd, but reduced uptake of zinc and copper. Therefore, 'BF-F' can increase the biomass and the expression of metal ion transport genes to enhance the absorption of Cd by S. portulacastrum, and promote Cd phytoremediation. This study provides a novel insight for understanding of Cladosporium 'BF-F' to improve phytoremediation of Cd, which shows potential applications in bioremediation of Cd from contaminated soils.
