A new mixed-alkali tin sulfate fluoride birefringent crystal, Na2SnSO4F2, was successfully synthesized and grown. It exhibits a large birefringence of 0.086 at 1064 nm and maintains a large bandgap. Theoretical calculations indicate that the relatively well-aligned [SnOF2] polyhedra are the primary contributor to the large birefringence.
