This chapter begins with a review of methodologies for quantifying basic climatic design values and reliability assessment for infrastructure design under stationary conditions. It explores challenges and methodologies for engineering design under nonstationary climate conditions, with a focus on extreme hazards. It then shifts to the concept of climate nonstationarity, introducing techniques for its detection using historical data and future climate projections. Building on these bases, this chapter introduces extreme value analysis and reliability assessment approaches tailored for future changing climate conditions. Finally, this chapter addresses the concept of deep uncertainties in climate modeling for nonstationary future climates, outlining engineering design and implementation strategies, such as adaptation pathways, to manage such uncertainties, and illustrates these principles with case studies.
