abstract

  • This concluding chapter synthesizes the key themes and findings from this volume on cruise line sustainability. The contributions underscore the scale of the environmental and social impacts generated by mega-cruise tourism, highlighting governance failures, regulatory gaps, and uneven economic benefits. At the same time, they reveal opportunities to embed sustainability within guest experiences, advance technological and circular economic innovations, and center workforce well-being as part of broader environmental, social, and governance commitments. Several frameworks provide theoretical grounding, including the precautionary principle, the triple bottom line, collaborative governance, the circular economy, and the critical political economy. Building on these, the chapter outlines pathways for the cruise industry, from adopting binding regulations to strengthening community partnerships and embedding authentic sustainability in operations. A forward-looking research agenda identifies gaps around governance, resilience, labor justice, consumer behavior, and regenerative models, positioning cruise tourism as both a challenge and a laboratory for sustainable futures.
