abstract

  • Harassment continues to be a significant problem in organizations. Research on harassment in organizations—whether directed toward legally protected groups or more general workplace harassment, suggests that leadership plays a key role in the management and reduction of such behaviors. However, there are no theoretical frameworks for understanding how leadership affects the management and prevalence of harassment in organizations. In this paper, we develop a theoretical framework of the relation between authentic leadership and the policies and practices designed to manage workplace harassment. We review the relevant leadership research to develop this model that incorporates both theories and dimensions of authentic leadership as well as behaviors that are aimed at reducing the frequency of harassment in the workplace.
