If we want to address the violence inherent in modern Western thought, then we must undiscipline our thinking. How might we begin to re-attune to our evolving, embodied contexts on a planet shaped by climate change and globalization? What types of planetary futures might we co-imagine and begin to work toward? These questions are at the heart of understanding human conditions in the 21st century. Exploring them will be important for co-constructing worlds that work toward the flourishing of the planetary community. This chapter examines five different responses to the ills of globalization and climate change that are in some ways insufficient continuations of old, colonial ways of thinking: 1) returning to nationalism, 2) returning to localism and bioregionalism, 3) continuing neo-liberalism with social and ecological fixes added on, 4) choosing the “doomer” response, and 5) choosing the transhumanist response that takes us off the planet earth and out of our bodies. After examining each of these responses, this chapter suggests that we ought to adopt a critical planetary romanticism to become planetary citizens.
