abstract

  • Electrical components have been adopted in place of hydraulic or pneumatic components on modern aircrafts, known as more electric aircraft (MEA). MEA emit lesser pollutants, has lesser weight, cheaper to operate and are quieter. For MEA, reliable power inverters that are capable of working in the electrical power system even after unexpected faults are highly desired. The major cause of faults in inverters is failure of power semiconductor devices and capacitor. Hence there is need of multilevel inverter (MLI) capable of tolerating faulty conditions and provides uninterruptable power supply to the loads. Such MLI is known as fault tolerant MLI (FT MLI). This paper discusses the operation of existing five level FT MLI under normal, and faulty conditions. The application of five level FT MLI for MEA is validated with simulation results.
