abstract

  • As smart devices become more integrated into daily life, they increasingly shape the experiences of individuals from diverse backgrounds. However, concerns about user privacy remain prevalent. While numerous studies have explored these privacy issues, few have focused on how individuals from various racial and ethnic groups perceive and respond to them. To explore this, we surveyed 100 participants from diverse backgrounds, including Asian, Black or African American, Latin/Hispanic, Middle Eastern or North African, White, and others. Our goal was to understand their privacy concerns, the preventive actions they adopt, and their broader attitudes toward smart devices through a diversity lens. Our findings indicate that privacy concerns and prevention methods are largely similar across groups. For instance, different racial and ethnic groups share similar concerns regarding data storage, access, collection, and profiling. In terms of inclusivity, however, some participants reported feeling excluded when smart devices struggled to understand their accents or languages. We discuss potential recommendations to enhance privacy, inclusivity, and user experience in smart device design.
