abstract

  • Self-definition affirms Black women’s power and agency to name one’s reality. Self-creation is the actions, decisions, and documentation that embody living that identity once named. By analyzing self-creation, a Black feminist rhetorical practice, this chapter discusses how self-creation enriches feminist archives, increases visibility to reclaim underrepresented narratives, and nourishes the imagination to exist freely. To provide an everyday example of self-creation, I analyze the Instagram account of Haitian fitness influencer Keren Desir (@thedesiredbody). This chapter highlights social media’s significant role in strengthening Caribbean women’s agency, voice, and representation.
