abstract

  • In light of the substantial gender gaps persistent in metal music, this article aims to report the results of a collective analysis conducted during the pandemic that identified concrete barriers and limitations to the participation of women in metal communities in both the Global North and South. This analysis has been developed online by a think tank/deliberation group through a participatory action research (PAR) project implemented by 36 feminist researchers, artists, and activists from the metal music scenes in their respective countries. We developed an online methodology based on: 1) a panoramic and hermeneutic transdisciplinary assessment of gender barriers in the labor and artistic spheres based on the available literature and 2) a collective discussion within the reflection group to summarize barriers that could be applied to the metal music scenes. In this way, we aimed to better understand the gendered structures, mechanisms, and constraints contained within metal communities in different contexts, thereby contributing to a broader goal for gender justice.
