abstract

  • Constantine (Kostas) A. Balanis was born on October 29, 1938 in Trikala, Greece, right before WWII started. Trikala is in the region of Thessaly at the heartland of Greece. In mythology, Trikala was associated with demigod hero Asclepius, known for his medical powers. During Greece’s WWII occupation, two different countries will occupy Greece, and after 1945, the country will enter into a devastating civil war that will end in 1950. Therefore, even though the U.S.A. Marshal plan provided enormous help to restore the country’s economy, Greece will take a long time to recover. Therefore, the interest to pursue better opportunities was very desirable. Kostas’s family had seven children, and he was the 2nd oldest boy. Luck has it that his uncle had immigrated to the U.S.A. in 1920s, and was a successful clothing merchant. His uncle volunteered to sponsor one of the children to come to the U.S., a familiar story those days. Kostas was ready to immigrate when the oldest brother passed-up the opportunity.
