abstract

  • A Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is the highest level of education for actual practice of a nursing discipline. 1 Nurse anesthesia is a subset of nursing leading to unique applications when implementing the DNP Essentials. The DNP Essentials provide a concrete road map of how the DNP degree functions. The 8 DNP Essentials are the foundational competencies required of all doctoral graduates. The following chapter will focus on the journey a DNP-prepared certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA) has taken to make a difference using the 8 DNP Essentials as a guide. The DNP Essentials often overlap in practice, as CRNAs usually address more than 1 competency at a time. There are 2 Essentials that will be discussed at length, Essential V: Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care, and Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving the Nation’s Health.
