abstract

  • This paper introduces a new approach for risk-based selection of inspection methods for external post tensioning (PT) tendons in segmental bridges. To illustrate the pro- cedure, an actual segmental post-tensioned bridge was used for which the inspection results were available. Hands-on and nondestructive tests were performed on several external PT tendons to investigate their accuracy. The results showed the level of accuracy for the selected methods for the inspection to be adequate for the inspection to continue in large scale. External tendons of the bridge were then inspected using the selected NDE method. The results were used to sta- tistically determine the condition of post tensioning elements using finite element analysis and a deterioration model proposed for post tensioning elements. This will facilitate lifetime reliability analysis utilizing the structural model and deterioration model. Although the approach was developed for post tensioned bridges, it can be also adopted for other bridge types.
