abstract

  • Citizenship education in early childhood focuses on building their capacity to identify community actors and promote prosocial behaviors. As children get older civic education is often limited to the history and functions of the US Government. Throughout the literature, there is little emphasis on how diverse communities negotiate their contested identity as citizens and the implications for early childhood education. This chapter explores how early childhood teachers enacted a cultural citizenship curriculum by incorporating the 13-guiding principles of the Black Lives Matters at School movement. Findings from interviews and observations of four early childhood teachers who participated in the Black Lives Matter at School movement document how their work contributes to a cultural citizenship curriculum for young children. © 2023 selection and editorial matter, Stacy Lee DeZutter.
